Editorial comments: Morning. MT had planned to visit Shetland but fog prevented her plane from landing so she reversed her itinerary and landed on Orkney. She spoke impromptu to farmers at a cattle auction, "and told them to loud applause that she had been shocked by the fact that transport costs in the islands took pound3 or pound4 from the price per cwt of Orkney livestock. Tory policy was to get a road equivalent tariff for island shipping services". Later, attending the tenth anniversary celebrations of Loganair, she said, "I marvel that you get anything on schedule at all in these islands" (Glasgow Herald, 27 September 1977).
