Message to the electors of Thurrock

I have come to Thurrock because this important by-election comes at a critical time for our country. Every Conservative vote on polling day will be another nail in the coffin of incompetent Government.

Two years ago Labour courted the electorate with the promise: “Back to work with Labour” . Since that promise was made, unemployment in Thurrock has more than doubled and is now the highest in the South-East.

In the same period the number of company bankruptcies has doubled.

The Labour Party's claim to be the Party of all the people is totally bogus. Socialist equality is the equality of the dole queue and the bankruptcy court, and the Labour Government have offered most people in this country only equal shares of misery.

We Conservatives have demanded that the Government set an example and cut its own extravagant spending programmes instead of calling only on others to make sacrifices. Frequently aided and abetted by the Liberals in Parliament, Labour has brought us to the edge of economic ruin and put us in debt for years to come.

I am delighted to support such a fine local candidate as Percy Lomax. His intimate knowledge of Thurrock will make him a fine M.P. for all the people of the area and will help restore the contact and trust between the people and their Government which is so vital. We need more of his kind at Westminster.
