Our chance in Europe

Conservatives saw to it that Europe stays united. Responding to the Party's call, they were the decisive factor in the massive popular vote for keeping the new Europe intact.

Mrs Margaret Thatcher, Leader of the Party, commenting on the Referendum result for Monthly News, said:

“The people voted to retain their place in Europe and, through Europe, to preserve their influence in the world. Their message—clear, emphatic—is that the nation's spirit for meeting new challenges is still there, a reservoir of power that is capable of making Britain great again.

“In another sense, too, the Referendum result has vital meaning. It repeated the message delivered at the last two General Elections, namely, that the vast majority in Britain are in favour of moderation as the guiding principle of progress.

“The left-wing extremists have failed. For them, June 5 was a day of disaster, but they will go on promoting their divisive policies in this country of ours. That is their mission. It shall not be allowed to succeed.

“The nation has voted to hold on to its chance in the world. There is now the chance for us—no more than a chance—of national renaissance, social and economic.

“The Government must now deal with the economic problems that face us. They must tackle inflation with deeds, as well as condemning it with words, and take steps to restore business confidence.”
