Mr. Heath 's return to the front of the stage in this campaign has been matched by the retiring behaviour of the Conservative leader, Mrs. Thatcher, who found time for a week's holiday. But she too has welcomed today's result.
Tonight, Robert Hargreaves found her at Lichfield, and asked if she agreed that the Prime Minister's position had been strengthened by the result: [end p1]
Thatcher
I think what has happened has probably torn his party apart, and it will take a very long time to recover.
Hargreaves
Could you elaborate on that, what you mean?
Thatcher
No, there have been considerable debates within that party, I do not believe that they are confined to … . their problem. I have many problems, but I'm not responsible for Mr. Wilson 's.
Hargreaves
Mr. Wilson has gone to the country on this issue. He's got an overwhelming verdict in support of the position he's taken, doesn't that … .?
Thatcher
Mr. Wilson has been very lucky in the Conservative support he's had from a party which doesn't hesitate to put country before party. He's been very fortunate indeed. Indeed, it would have been better for the country if Mr. Wilson had been as consistent about Europe as leaders of the Conservative Party have been. The uncertainty was created by him. We have now had to come in to sort out that uncertainty and to resolve it.
Hargreaves
You'll wholeheartedly support this verdict in parliament?
Thatcher
I'm delighted with it. Delighted.
