MESSAGE TO THE “JOURNAL”

In a special message to the “Journal” yesterday, Mrs Thatcher made reference to her early life in Grantham.

The message said: “I realise that the first 20 years of my life were in Grantham and I learnt there my early political training.

“I remember the inside of the Town-hall vividly when I went there with my Alfred Robertsfather. I'm sorry he is not alive today.

“David Wood, now on The Times, who started off on the ‘Grantham Journal’, remembers my father and reporting him on the council.

“I always believe that I was very lucky to have been brought up in a small town with a great sense of friendliness and voluntary service.”
